Exchange Web Services (EWS) the new lingua franca of groupware?

After a period of silence I am thinking of starting a new approach to get more interoperability within different groupware products. Microsoft provides a SOAP based service called EWS to access groupware data provided by Exchange, Apple Mail supports EWS, David Woodhouse implements EWS in Evolution, Zarafa plans to implement EWS, ...

I think its is time to implement a EWS gateway with a generic plugin architecture for different backends. This will be interesting also for ERP and DMS systems like agorum and heliumV. The OSII might be a good incubator for a project like this.  Implementing EWS as a plugin into Mule might be the most flexible solution.

I spoke to the people of DAISHO BLACKSMITH, they might become a interesting cross platform client alternative soon.

Today I found a interesing link to an active sync implementation for Evolution. Look here.
